Celebrity wedding: Ekta Kaul and Sumeet Vyas

Image
Make way for the just married TV couple in town - Ekta Kaul and Sumeet Vyas. As their Instagrams are up-to-date with the scoops from their wedding, good wishes are not ceasing to pour in. However, it is their couple picture that is fetching a lot of compliments for them. There is no denying that the duo looked resplendant on their big day. But you have to give to Ekta for amping up the glam quotient. She stole the show, hands down in her maroon lehenga. The unique choice of the lehenga's colour is worth taking note of, by the way. It has all the trapping to set the tone for the upcoming wedding season too. On top of that, her jewellery choices are also commendable. Mathapatta with pearl infused a bridal feel into her look while the Polki set adorning her neckline worked like a charm. Must say, this TV bride has championed the bridal game.  Author: Deepa Mishra Disclaimer: All images used in the blog have been sourced from Google purely for the purpose of info...

Hidden jewels in Rajasthan’s treasure trove

Rajasthan is home to many  jewellery art  and Meenakari is one of the popular ones. Not just within brides-to-be of India but also world over, this art form has a huge fan following. And why not. Who does not like the sight of colourful intricate designs on a shimmering metal surface!  Meenakari  therefore did not remain confined to  traditional jewellery  but diversified into more modern products, often with a copper base, including bowls, ashtrays, key chains, vases, spoons, figures of deities and wall pieces. It is a great work for any kinds of vase of marble things. Essentially,  Meenakari  is the art of colouring and ornamenting the surface of metals by fusing brilliant hues over it in an intricate design. This technique is used to express various themes and occasions with vivid clarity. In the depressions of popular designs, animal figurines or  images of gods and goddess , the enamels are filled to give the appearance of a...

There is more to your jewellery than meets the eye

Image
You thought jewellery is just an adornment? Sorry to burst your bubble. You don't seem to know your ornaments well. They have got more purposes to serve than just to make your look attractive. Let’s take a stock of those very purposes with which most of the ornaments came into being and find out what they stand for.     An eerie tale of earrings Today earrings have more varieties than you can think of. From jhumkas and chandliers to hoops and studs, it’s available in wide-ranging designs to go with different occasions. But legend has it, this pair of jewels was designed for a different purpose. It was believed that evil spirits could enter the body through its openings and ornaments were said to prevent that. So, besides their acupuncture benefits, earrings are believed to ward off evil spirits. A heart-touching ring story  The ring finger has a vein passing through it which runs directly to the heart and so, the wedding rings are worn on ...

A cultural kaleidoscope of Karnataka

Image
Karnataka is the tourism capital of India. From pristine beaches to rolling hills, from art forms to architectural structures and from silk sarees to sandalwood, people from India and overseas come here to soak into its distinct beauty. But what bowls them over is the gold jewellery of Karnataka . Blessed with Kolar mines, the state produces about 80 per cent of India’s gold and this has given way to a stupendous heritage. If you ever get a chance to attend a Kannadiga wedding, don’t miss it. It would be the true spectacle of Karnataka’s traditional designs.  The Goddess Lakshmi is the most favoured image engraved on the ornaments and so is the practice of setting in ruby and emerald stones.   A striking piece of jewellery worn by the brides here is a layered chain called  Entele Sara  which is strung with gold beads.  Sitting on the bride’s forehead, Netri Chutti is essentially a mangtikka that is further embellished with coloured stone...

Jhumka makes a strong case for unity in diversity

Image
One of my assignments, required me to study the jewellery culture of India . Needless to say that every region here has its own specialties. But it is noteworthy that jhumka is one such jewel that is beyond culture, era, region, religion and language. This bell-shaped ear ornament is believed to have originated in the temples of South India, Bengal, Orissa and Central India centuries ago but with the passage of time, has made a special place in every culture. Today, if you walk into a north Indian wedding, from the bride to the family members and the guests, you will notice most of them flaunting this gorgeous pair . From hoop-jhumkas and multi-step designs to oversize ones, there is a spectacle of jhumkas  to feast your eyes on. When you travel to the land of sand dunes, Rajasthan, you’ll be even more fascinated by the kaanphool version of this pair which is essentially ear-crawlers with jhumka bells. Maharashtra’s bridal earrings too goes by the same name and even ...

Bridal photoshoots kept the Bollywood portals abuzz this year. From Katrina Kaif, Kirti Sanon to Alia Bhatt and Jacqueline Fernandez, a line-up of actresses kept the temperatures soaring in bridal attires all year long. But what sets this season of photoshoots apart is the distinct bridal ensembles that gave serious style goals to brides-to-be.    Each creation was different from what we are used to seeing (read gaudy red lehenga with golden embroidery) and that we had already seen. The designers went on to explore different hues, makes and cultures to create something unseen and unheard of. From boho chic and Cindrella-inspired to tribal grunge and European touch, they went all about to put together a unique look.   Our Indian weddings are basically a series of rituals. We have sangeet, we have mehendi, shaadi, followed by receptions and post-marriage ceremonies. Now-a-days, a lot of them hold a bachelorette party too. Keeping in mind each of these events...

Her jadau jewellery set that comprised of a pair of earrings , haathphool and a gorgeous necklace , beautifully complemented the laser cut-out hemline of the saree while adding the deserved sparkle to her lavish look.   Given the growing popularit...
